Singing and dancing to their deaths': football’s forgotten tragedy
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2020/dec/03/rangers-football-forgotten-tragedy-ibrox-stadium-disaster-glasgow

In 1971, an Old Firm derby at Ibrox ended with the death of 66 fans as they celebrated a late goal. John Hodgman survived the terrifying crush and, 50 years on, asks how Rangers avoided taking responsibility

I thought only 96 people had ever died at a football match?

That seems to be the standard message.

That is an EYE-OPENING read.

I vaguely recall the 1971 disaster being on the news, and of course the sign on the stairs at the Boleyn Ground, but I had no idea that it wasn't the first incident of that nature on that particular stairway. The FOURTH, no less!

It is ironic that the sign on the North Bank read "Remember Ibrox', because the Rangers owners were apparently all too willing to forget Ibrox's safety record.

They should have been jailed, never mind fined for that.

That's the one! Nice one for putting it up on here.

Fuck, do I miss the north bank. What I'd give for just one more stood on there.

To be fair, he deserves to take a break every now and again.
Practicing dance moves for those tik tok videos can really take it out of you.

I can recall being at a cup replay against Spurs pre Hillsborough. There must have been over 10,000 West Ham there (not all ticket). The whole end was swaying continuously backwards, forwards and side to side. I'd be amazed if no one was injured that night!

To be fair I have been as crushed at concerts as to what I have at football ... seen plenty of women faint and get trampled on ... was at that QPR cup game that could have got a bit nasty... at our place remember Evertona and Villa having loads spill onto the pitch when they was shoved all in that corner pen...

Disasters that occurred over the years:
Moorgate
Bradford
Kings Cross
Marchioness
Zeebrugge
Purley / Clapham rail

Enquiries compiled reports and action was taken immediately, it took 28 years between Ibrox and Hillsborough to put football stadia right.

Anyone who went to football in the 70’s would have experienced that surge crush ...terrifying

I remember the North Bank Ibrox sign. It could have happened at almost every club, how many times have I been lifted off my feet when a surge happened???

There but for the grace of God.....

The Semifinals a Villa Park and Elland Road the crowd with so tight my feet were off of the ground a death trap but only working class people dying. I have mild claustrophobia now. I always have to sit on an outside seat at a table or at the movies and an aisle seat on a plane.

That Ibrox sign in the NB

had forgotten all about that, there must be a photo somewhere.

Yep, that's right, 'remember Ibrox' signs on the north bank, but that was all. The club did absolutely fuck all to make the terraces or exits safer. Just sheer luck that there weren't some major incidents.
The apathy of football club owners back then was just mind-blowing. And anyone under the age of 40 has no idea what shit holes most grounds were. Still, I wouldn't have had it any other way, despite coming close to serious injury a few times.

I remember the 'leave safely, remember Ibrox' sign (or something like this) on the north bank stairs.

When you think about it was pure luck there weren't more people crushed to death on the terraces.

Thanks for this Northern Sold, my first and only old firm game.

I was encouraged to go by some friends who were in the local Rangers supporters club. We were in that end in the middle behind the goal. It was a cr&p game so I was glad when someone suggested we leave early to beat the crowd after Celtic had scored. I remember some debate which exit to use. Fortunately, we didn't chose Exit 13 (there but for the grace of god!). First we knew about the disaster was about 2 hours later when someone noticed a newspaper billboard whilst on the way home.
